UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Seeks to “Turn a Corner on Brexit”
Keir Starmer is set to “turn a corner on Brexit” and rebuild relationships with EU member states during his visit to Germany for talks with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The discussions will focus on defense, trade, and migration, as well as plans for a bilateral treaty aimed at enhancing defense cooperation, similar to a 2010 agreement with France. Starmer’s trip is part of a broader strategy to address contentious issues early in his term, with hints of potential tax increases in the upcoming budget to address a £22 billion shortfall.
Starmer emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with Germany and France to tackle illegal migration and boost economic growth in the UK and Europe. This visit follows his attendance at the European Political Community meeting and NATO summit with Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Starmer’s packed agenda includes meetings with business leaders from Siemens Energy and Rheinmetall. He will also participate in a joint press conference with Scholz before heading to Paris for the Paralympics opening ceremony and further discussions with Macron. Scholz is reportedly eager to strengthen UK-Germany relations, particularly in light of trade challenges post-Brexit.
